Security Through Information Overload

I guess most people are familiar with the idea of Security Through Obscurity.. it’s generally considered a bad thing.. if you are writing software.

Two related ideas..
Security Through Information Overload
Over Sharing (personal stuff) Through Information Overload.

I recently had a bit of trouble with my two encrypted file systems after upgrading some Debian utilities. It would have been really nasty if I had lost all that stuff.. about 4GB of weird and wonderful things I’ve collected over the last 10 years.

Since uber secure (AES blah blah) crypto can easily turn on you, I asked a friend where he keeps private information. Turns out he uses no crypto.. he figures it’s just too much work for anybody to go read through all the stuff he keeps to find anything really private. Security through information overload.

This made me think about all the personal things I seem to share on my blog.. it’s a form of therapy I guess, putting it out there, labelling things, processing things.. I seem to interweave this with so much other random information that I’m pretty sure nobody cares to decode or track any of it. Over sharing through information overload.

ps. I guess I somehow need to share the password for my crypto file systems, just in case I get hit by a bus.

Sig-marker

Pet hate #107.. people who don’t mark the start of their email signatures..

Everybody, pretty please, make sure you have a plain text email signature, with your contact details and a sig-marker (“– “) so my email client knows where your signature starts.

Thanks.

..delimited from the body of the message by a single line consisting of
exactly two hyphens, followed by a space, followed by the end of line (i.e.,
“– \r\n”). This latter prescription, which goes by many names, including
“sig dashes”, “signature cut line”, and “sig-marker”, allows software to
automatically mark or remove the sig block as the receiver desires.

Perfect Hindsight

Reading one of Cath’s posts last night.. made me think about an email I wrote yesterday.. hoping to share some perfect hindsight wisdom:

actually, that’s not the whole truth,
I feel like an idiot because I was a stubborn selfish idiot..

Virgo once told me (a bit too late, sadly) that people who come from “broken” families need to work much harder at their family lives.

..I guess only-children from broken families are simply screwed.. and then there’s me, I’m off the chart.

Remember kids, relationships often involve hard work.

ps. I think I’ve made some progress.. even put the pictures back.

Short Attention Span Living

So, I recently moved, again.. 3rd time in 6 months. Maybe it’s a phase I’m going through. At the moment living in the same place for more than 1 year seems long.

We’re living in Bakoven now. Andy, Keith and Joe. Been here just over a week. I like it. Mia loves it. The kittens seem very happy.

I count 17 empty wine bottles in our recycling pipeline after week 1. This recycling thing is not all bad.. gives us some stats, haha.

Seems most people have a fear of moving. Sure, it’s stressful and disruptive.. but, I kinda like the idea of being a tourist in my own city. I call it: short attention span living. Why not?

“it use to be people lived in their homes, now they sleep in their houses” — unknown

I’m on first name basis with a number of rental agents in town by now. Searching for places to stay is maybe the most challenging part. Also, you need good movers. I have really cool movers (thanks Jonathan).

The first thing you’ll notice is that scale in important. Shopping for a two bedroom place is not really worth it. The value curve just looks a lot better for 3+ bedroom places.

This kinda implies you need a few similar thinking people to live with. People who handle change well and you get along with. Fun people.

Internet access is the next snag. It’s not always easy finding something with good Amobia coverage.

The most recent move was, well.. interesting. By the last weekday of the month we had not yet signed a lease for a new place.. but the movers were busy loading our stuff at 11am. Point of no return.. _really_ in between places. Then Mia’s mom phoned and asked me to look after her.. try moving while entertaining a 2yo.

At some point that afternoon the movers had been waiting for 2 hours with all our furniture in front of the new house while I did the final lease negotiations. Living on the edge.

You can see how the stress affects the cats (not my cats). I was pretty tired the next day from packing and unpacking. Lying on Llandudno beach that Sunday.. I figured it was actually all rather painless.

I love living in Cape Town. Let’s see.. I’ve lived in Vredehoek, Newlands fernwood, Newlands village, Somerset West (briefly), Gardens, Obs (briefly), Tamboerskloof and now Bakoven / Camps Bay.

I think I’d still like to live in.. Bishops Court, Llandudno, Kalk bay, Glen Beach, Higgovale and Oranjezight.

As a friend told me once, it’s all about service, lifestyle and experiences. The Straw Man lifestyle — as my cousin Jacques calls it.

  • Dr Bain, how’s your brain? — Andy

  • Some people are lucky enough to have two sets of moral frameworks. They switch them like Stallone turns his cap in Oven the Top.
  • Kinda cool when ideas you put out there boomerang back to you. Some things make an impact, enough for somebody to use and echo back.

Have a fun week. I’m off to go for a run next to the ocean somewhere.

Tag 6-6 photo

Bev tagged me with this 6th photo from the 6th “folder” thing..
from my photo collection, 6th directory, 6th directory in there, 6th photo in there..

Here we go:

Satchmo

Exif details: 2003-02-15, 21:28, taken with my old Canon IXUS v.

It’s a picture of a b&w image/portrait I have of Satchmo. I was very much into Jazz at the time.

Not the best photo. I guess I was bored one night before leaving for a trip to Mozambique. I had just gotten my visa and all kinds of anti-mozzy chemicals. I was living in Newlands at the time. Good memories.
