About

This is Joe Botha’s personal blog. Blogging is cheaper than therapy.

“Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” — Dr. Seuss

I’m a serial entrepreneur, a (super)dad and a photographer, currently living in Cape Town, South Africa. I co-founded and sold my shares in 3 technology businesses by age 33.. and I’m working on the next one: TrustFabric – my 9th startup. I like: walks around Lions Head (in 4 of the photos below), swimming, running, Debian, Cape Town in the summertime, tea, Chardonnay, Dvorak (the keyboard layout), Wes Anderson movies, AfrikaBurn and good design. Maybe not in that exact order. Also, fast convertible cars on winding coastal roads, the beach at sunset, food, fun and friends.

“I live the way I type; fast, with a lot of mistakes.”

I’ve been known to be a bit fanatical about a few topics and I seem to enjoy analysing the obvious. Some people say I’m an impatient idealist. I figure my job is to convince people of the truth.

My philosophy of life goes something like this.. wealth is a side effect of passion. I guess my role models are: Elon Musk, Matt Mullenweg and Han Solo.

“The secret… I guess you’ve just gotta find something you love to do and then… do it for the rest of your life.” — Max, Rushmore

Why the title? Be awesome. Do epic shit.

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”
— George Bernard Shaw

“People are always blaming circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.” — George Bernard Shaw

“The best way to predict the future is to design it.” — Buckminster Fuller.

I’m an unreasonable man. I like the idea of designing and creating your own reality.

I’m an optimist, anarchist, heretic, hedonist.. and a business man. I like the ideas of order without leaders, morality without religion, for the common good, decentralisation and democratisation.

“We reject: kings, presidents and voting.
We believe in: rough consensus and running code.”
— David D. Clark

“Anarchy means ‘without leaders’; not ‘without order'”. — V for Vendetta

It’s been said that: Joe is the kind of guy that wants to do things the right way even if they are hard.

If you want to find out more about Joe, look at my /me page.

I seem to make lots of notes at the moment.. I guess it’s a form of self discovery. I’m currently interested in Lifestyle Design, Value Layer Abstraction and Vendor Relationship Management.

I’m a founder of four companies: Frogfoot, Amobia, Teraco and TrustFabric.

Three movies you need to see to get Joe: Rushmore, V for Vendetta and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.. and maybe a bit of Californication.

I often write just for myself and friends or just for recording some history.. so, I don’t care for every post to make sense to everybody out there. Because I can.

“It’s hard not to like a man of many qualities, even if most of them are bad.” — anonymous

I’ve been known to give talks on topics like GTD, Lifestyle Design, Open Source and Entrepreneurship.

I started blogging in November 2006 after attending a GeekDinner in Cape Town. I’ve been a WordPress fan ever since. Every revolution needs a blog.. just like every revolution needs dancing.
