Cryptic Movie Reviews

Some movies showing at the Labia at the moment… guess I’m their biggest fan. Nice to put my mind in neutral with popcorn and beer. I watched The Savages tonight.

  • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet St. – Sucks
  • Michael Clayton – Pretty Good
  • Juno – Very Good
  • No Country for Old Men – Excellent
  • The Savages – Good

Ok, Protein shake for dinner, done. Time for a drink at Asoka.

ps. Check out the new Grid page we built today. I think it’s pretty cool. We’ll get a better feature strip graphic soon, with more cool datacenter stuff.

Agile PM and Feature Boxes

Just returned from the monthly SPIN meeting at the Bandwidth Barn. Jan Pool talked about Agile Project Management. Good presentation.

I’m no PM wiz, so things like Agile and Scrum are kinda new to me. I’ve heard people talk about these pretty often but this talk was very useful in understanding the ideas behind the buzzwords.

In the end I thought.. Ahh, yeah, that makes sense.. kinda like the stuff we’ve been doing naturally (-:

One very useful tip I could relate to was to create a “Feature Box” or “Vision Box” at the beginning of a project. This is really a box.. as in packaging for the product you are aiming to build. List all it’s cool features on the sides. Try distill the content to something you would print, fold and put on a shelf for your target market to buy.

Wifi Hotspot Box

Last year, in the initial phase of the Frogfoot Wifi Hotspot project, we had a pre-launch demo at iWeek. We had to have a brochure and we had to have a box. It was a fun task and focused our attention on the important and unique features of our project.

PS. They also have nice snacks at SPIN (-:

Quick Updates

It’s been a while.. let’s see what I’ve been busy with and give you some random news..

  • Wrote a press release for WAPA’s legal action.
  • The Amobia Joburg network is about to go live. The first Joburg ring is up. Just need to feed it some Internet access.
  • Been spending most of my time on the new Frogfoot Website. Very close to done. The blog part is looking good. Still writing some content.
  • I could not make it to the last GeekDinner, it was the same day as Mia’s birthday. But my name is on the list for the May GeekDinner. I’m happy to see that the GeekDinner movement is progressing well in it’s decentralised and democratised form.. with the help of a few pillars in the community, naturally.
  • A good friend (Dr. Strangelove), who lives in England now will be in Cape Town over the next few days. Let’s hope for some nice weather. I guess it’s time to say goodbye to the summer soon.
  • The Amobia Suicide Gorge walk was good fun. I put some pics up. One of the less fit people walked from about 9 AM to 9 PM. Hehe.
  • This weekend is the annual Amobia company weekend. Somewhere along the West Coast. Involves paint-ball and 4×4 driving tracks.
  • Mia and I went to World of Birds in Hout Bay last weekend. Nice place. We did Butterfly World the week before that. I’m kinda running out of weekend entertainment venues for 2yr olds.. please post some suggestions. Really, please.
  • Mia seems to like Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes.
  • Attended a Neotel metro-ethernet launch last week. All I can say is “pfffftt”. What lame presenters.
  • I’m thinking of doing a presentation about how Frogfoot is using WordPress as a CMS with some WordPress security tips at the next WPCTP meetup.

..back to editing Frogfoot website content again.

Cape Town WordPress Meeting

Attended the 2nd Cape Town WordPress meetup this afternoon at the Barn. The usual suspects and a few new faces. Had nice chats with Henk, Sarah, Alan and Jonathan. I was mostly there to bitch about WordPress security issues and to brainstorm a solution for easily updating a growing (6+) number of WP blogs. I think I confirmed some theories. I’ll keep working on my ideas.

I was happy to find more google-free ™ people there. Just say no to gmail, google calendar, US government indexing… reminds me of that Larson cartoon where they have the GSM phone in a museum and the tag line is something like “old surveillance / spying equipment”. That’s how they killed Pablo. Ok, ok.. I guess I should quit Facebook to back up my paranoia.

Thanks to Callum &co for organising and planning the event.

After that I had a Royale burger with The WSE.. and a couple of Laurentinas. No tuna at Royale today. Very sad.

Frogfoot’s new website is coming along nicely. Yes, WordPress based. Soon, see it, you will. I’m busy getting the Frogs to choose their avatars and motivating them to contribute (blog).

I still have to figure out a way to make a cheap digital camera waterproof for our Suicide Gorge mission this weekend.

Oh, also had a positive meeting with a VoIP equipment distributor today about the Blio PBX.

ps. I love Cape Town.

Quick Update

Been a while since I wrote something here. I guess I’ve been busy. Let’s see, a few random updates…

  • Had a nice weekend in Pringle Bay with friends, got some sun.
  • Visited the Endeavor crew on the 28th floor of the LG building a while ago. Nice views. Still no real scope to work together it seems.
  • Been working on the web interface for the next Blio CPE software, which will allow Amobia to build outdoor (integrated) hotspots.
  • Had an Amobia meeting last night and looked at some financial stats. Amobia grew its revenue by about 110% over its last financial year 2006 vs 2007. Amobia is about 2.25 years old now. Well on it’s way to being a successful business when it gets to the magic 3 years figure.
  • We’ve spend a good number of hours planning, designing and developing the new Frogfoot website. Looking pretty awesome. It’s built on WordPress. We should have all the themes and styles done by tomorrow, which leaves me to write and update some content. Should launch early next week… but a few beers after work on Friday are in order. The new Frogfoot blog design is even nicer than the Swimgeek blog.. I’m going to have to think up something new for my blog design (-:
  • There’s been a few interesting developments on the VANS license conversion front. More sports to follow soon. We have a WAPA committe meeting tomorrow afternoon.
  • There has been good interest in the Blio IP PBX lately. A number of website queries and interest from PBX solution companies. There are a few demo units out in the field and we’ve had some good feedback. Working on improving the documentation and making it easier to get going after buying a PBX.
  • Frogfoot’s hotspot sales are starting to pick up. We’ve done some work on an easy sign-up process for hotspot operators and we have a new all singing and dancing hotspot software revision due within the next month. It will have much better integration with our accounting system and better automation of things like debit order forms and profit sharing payment notices.
  • Amobia’s touch rugby team has been on a winning streak, they are top of the log at the moment.
  • Frogfoot is now an Extreme Networks partner. We’re thinking of cabling up Teraco with purple cat6 cable. :-P
  • Attended a very interesting meeting about IPP’s (independent power providers) this week. Had a bit of a feeling of deja vu.. seems the electricity market in this country is currently where the telecoms market was 10+ yrs ago.
  • Looks like I’ll be in Wellington this weekend and maybe visit the Stellenbosch Fresh Goods Market again.

Catch you on the flipside, crazy kids.

The story of the extra P

The MOPP opening night was fun. Lot’s of arty looking people. It’s interesting watching the reactions of complete strangers when they look at my pictures.

It’s sad how often people miss an opportunity to tell their story. At the last GeekDinner Callum asked me if Frogfoot would sponsor the hosting for MOPP.

Sounded like a good cause. I figured it was a bit strange to register mopp.org.za for the project when I could just register mop.org.za.. it’s “month of photograhy” right? Seems I did not know the story.

Tonight I hooked up with some friends from Stellenbosch days. I was sitting in Royal eating my seared tuna burger with salad (for a second night in a row).. when Will told me the story behind the month of peoples photography.

Turns out there was a ‘month of photography’ for all the groovy brand name artists. But then a group of people figured.. hey, what about the rest of us?.. and created the ‘month of peoples photography’ which was open and served the people.

I love stories of revolution. “We’re just going to have to see about that”, “by the geeks for the geeks”, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.

It’s a story that’s been going on for centuries. Open and free wins (Linux). Empowering people to share and contribute wins (Wikipedia). Collaborative efforts make people feel included and keen to engage. I think the GeekDinner movement is a story of revolution.

If you have story of revolution.. tell the story.

VC meeting

Had an interesting meeting today. Somewhere in the discussion we talked about competitors for Frogfoot and Amobia. I realised three interesting things about at least two of our competitors:

1) at an early stage we were involved in consulting and advice in their businesses
2) we were in conversation with both of them about working together before we became competitors
3) I think we still have a good working relationship with them today

which kinda means we have some catch-up work to do,
or you could read this as, at some point we figured..
“we’re just going to have to see about that” (-:
