Why Blog? I still don’t really know, but I’m giving it a try anyway. Here are some of my thoughts on why I did not like Blogging in the past.
First some background. I met a few Web 2.0 and Blogging geeks for dinner on Friday. As I explained to one of them.. I think humans have (basically) two things they keep busy with: Survival and Information Gathering. Survival and Information Gathering break down into two sub-components: “Empire Building” and “Demon Feeding”.
Empire Building is a simple and rewarding process, the more you work the better the empire grows. Every building block can be designed, built and neatly put into place.
Demon Feeding is a slippery slope of maintenance. It never stops and it needs constant attention, so it can be very frustrating.
I’ve always liked the idea of a personal homepage and it’s always nice (and time consuming) to discover an interesting person’s website. I see personal homepages as Empire Building. As you learn about yourself you add content to your page. You can fine tune the content as you go along, but in general you can rest after building each part. Homepages do not need much attention.
Blogging on the other hand is Demon Feeding. Lots of work, constant maintenance, never complete, always the urge to add something fresh.
At this point you may be asking yourself, “does he not have enough things to keep him busy?”. Well yes, I’m busy enough, but I’m also interested in why people blog and why people read blogs, the technologies used for blogging and the new trends like CGM and finding ways to have a dialog with customers… or, maybe I just had dinner with a few cool people who inspired me to play with WordPress.
