Easter weekend, sea kayaking and co-working spaces…
Monday, admin, gym, visited Twenty Fifty (co-working space), I managed to get EV3RSTORM to move around and shoot his bazooka, upgraded his firmware, red wine, dark chocolate, I put the last 4 years of Mia’s photos on an iPad for my mom (11206 of them).
Tuesday, gym, swim, sauna, my first Google Hangout video conference at Twenty Fifty (10Mbps fibre internet), visited Urban Hub and Inner City Ideas Cartel (co-working spaces), a bit of bicycle shopping, some overdue blogging at Truth Coffee on Buitengracht, AfrikaBurn planning meeting with Paul at Beerhouse, drinks at Sgt Peppers with Paul, Claus, Janey, Romy, Donna – Claus told us about his vigilantly window wiper removal antics.
Etienne became a dad this week – Paul pointed out that all his close guy friends are now dads.
I really slept well this week – I guess it’s because the evenings are getting a bit cooler.
Kinda nice living in a house where the alarm system works well.
“The fearless are busy creating their future.”
When last did you feel really alive?
Thursday, up at 6:30, made a presentation, meeting at Shoprite in Brackenfell, Wembley Square, 4th tech accelerator interview at Twenty Fifty, fetched Mia from her art class, sunset beach walk from Camps Bay to Clifton 1st and back, attempted to have supper at Marika’s (greek place next to Lazari’s), but made an exit before even getting our food – bad experience… don’t make hungry people wait too long, I ended up making Mia some food at home, in bed early.
Recurring lesson: too many IT projects in SA are run by CAs.
Mia cheated in a test (teacher emailed us) – she wanted to copy the word “through”. I guess it’s an experience we all need to have – though I don’t recall ever being caught.
Friday, public holiday, I made a big scrambled eggs breakfast while Mia finished building the Mindstorms (on her own), we programmed EV3RSTORM… Mia’s first programming experience, our plan to go swimming failed – after reminding Naulene twice to please pack swimwear for Mia she packed a cap, goggles, two towels and no swimsuit, *sigh*, nap, ribs and pizza at Da Vinci’s, a long walk around Green Point Park, ice cream, awesome sunset Sea Point Promenade walk – the play area tour – a great afternoon.
If you’ve lived in Cape Town for ten years or so, I can highly recommend living somewhere else for a year or two and then coming back. It’s hard not to get spoilt.
Saturday, dropped Mia at her mom’s (for a Hermanus visit), Neighbourgoods market, Pot Luck Club visit, a G&T at The Radisson, a Campari at home, nap, watched Bourne Ultimatum again with beer and pizza, watched some b-rate submarine action movie (the sad thing about DStv at home), watced Cosmos – very good.
Sunday, morning sea kayak paddle from Three Anchor Bay to the Waterfront past a big (~100) pod of dolphins with Georg, Aiden and Camilla – good fun, poached eggs at Caprice, frozen Daiquiri at Van Hunks, Swan Lake ballet at Artscape with Mia and Francis… they loved it, Asian Kitchen with Mia and Francis… not very successful – they don’t seem to like Asian food yet.
Tuesday, carwash day, Skype chat at Wellness Cafe, sunset drinks and dinner at The Roundhouse with Anais (the French girl I met in Geneva) – it may or may not have been an actual date, good conversation though.
I missed the Startupbootcamp London pitch day (visa delay).
Wednesday, fetched my passport with 6 month UK visa (finally), had to go get Mia some new hockey gear for the season (size 3 soccer boots, new 34.5inch stick, bigger shin pads, two gum guards and bigger socks), watched Mia’s hockey training, we had an early supper at Fred and Max in Somerset West… not bad – the pull-pork taco was a bit small, story book shopping, dropped Mia at her mom’s house, drove back to Cape Town, in bed early.
Mia asked if she could have my old cellphone – seems one of the children in her class has one already. I almost locked it down as a Telegram only device, but Naulene figured it’s a bad idea.
I reported the bad signal issues to Vodacom, let’s see if they fix anything.
Thursday, gym, swim, sauna, Skype meeting, met up with Werner in Stellenbosch, fetched Mia from art class, meeting with Naulene at Manuka – while Mia worked on her hula hoop skills (I have a pretty cool 120fps slo-mo video), dinner with Al, Paul, Johann, Martine, Brigitte and Stefan at Galbi (a Korean Barbecue restaurant at 210 Long Street)… good fun to braai your own food, in bed early.
Mia’s Mtech (digital music composition class) track from last term was pretty cool.
Friday, put a new LCD cover on my camera, photo processing, sunset walk from Glen Beach to Camps Bay to Clifton (three and a half beach) with Georg – pretty spectacular beach weather, burger in a bowl (Wasabi mayo option) at Da Vinci’s with Georg.
Check out New School Grand Cru – almost feels like this Chardonnay festival was designed just for me.
Saturday, up at 6:30, fetched Mia and watched 4 of her netball matches – not the best sport to watch, but I think she scored three goals, Long Street to get Mia a winter (.*perdry) hoodie, fresh juice and smoothie at Orchard on Long, Oranjezicht City Farm Market Day – interesting curries and some Nitro Creamy… the _best_ ice cream, but very rich, started building LEGO Mindstorms EV3, downloaded the (160MB) building instructions iPad app – which is pretty awesome… 3D and interactive, we built most of the EV3RSTORM robot, sunset Beta Beach walk from the Pitlochry side, epic sunset from the big rock, a game of backgammon and pizza at Baccini’s with The Cure / Disintegration playing in the background, bath, read, sleep.
I don’t think netball is really Mia’s thing, which is probably fine – netball is bad for the knees.
We’ve been taking a fair number of iPhone5s slo-mo videos since Mia discovered the feature – good fun.
It kinda feels weird that the iPhone5 takes the same dimension photos as
the iPhone4 – but the screen is not. Better quality photos though. (also f2.2)
Sunday, up early, we finished building EV3RSTORM, downloaded the (580MB) programming tools for EV3, to the Waterfront to watch Rio 2 (in 2D, because 3D is lame)… pretty good, ice cream, bumped into Nikki at the Waterfront, Strand Beach walk – end to end, we walked around the edge of the tidal pool, dropped Mia at her mom’s house, drove to Cape Town and watched 50/50 (entertaining movie) with a great glass of Saronsberg Shiraz 2011.
“Can you program it to talk like Yoda?” — Mia, about Mindstorms.
“A happy wife is a happy life.” — from Rio2… and an unhappy one is usually a crazy unreasonable bitch.
This post is late, it’s for the week of 31 March to 6 April.
Monday, Mia’s 8th birthday, a few birthday phone calls, we walked to Carlucci’s for breakfast – Mia had the sweet french toast option, walked around Oranjezicht City Farm, some just in time visa admin at the Gardens print shop, dragged Mia along to a UK visa appointment in Green Point, Waterfront, gelato, watched some Clone Wars Season 6, helped Mia wash her hair, last minute Techstars / Barclays Accelerator (London) entry… more about this next week.
I had to retire a 10 year old pair of Diesel jeans – which I’m happy to say still fit pretty well.
Hell: filling in long startup accelerator application forms with an Edge connection.
Did I mention the Vodacom Edge internet speeds?
Sadly, not that impressed with the 6th Clone Wars season. Meh. You kinda get the idea they made the last 4 episodes after they heard the news the show was coming to an end – the last 4 are pretty good.
Tuesday, watched the end of Clone Wars with Mia, print shop, fresh juice, Kings Craft (Pilsner? – nice beer) at Deer Park, De Waal Park, took a walk down Kloof Street and shared a pizza at Cocoa Dola… food was a bit meh.
Wednesday, rainy morning blogging session, LEGO Mindstorm EV3 delivery (birthday gift for Mia), Mia and I went for a Red Bus (Red Route) ride around Cape Town – have not done that since 2009ish… nice to see Cape Town from a tourist perspective, fish and chips at the aquarium (nice and fresh, must be their I&J sponsorship), dropped Mia at Naulene’s house, photo processing, a beer with Werner at Van Hunks, watched Blue Jasmine… good movie – the dentist scene made me think of Ernst and his habit of complementing girls on their teeth.
When you look at Bakoven from the Camps Bay side there is a big round rock in the sea with a hole in it, that looks like a… Bakoven – that is why you go on the Red Bus tour, kids.
Thursday, gym, swim, sauna, salad, drove to Stellenbosch, got a new hockey gum guard for Mia, fetched a new iPhone 5s (space grey 16GB)… contract upgrade time, also got a CellC SIM for an Android hotspot (Dan suggested CellC for the area), vitB shot, haircut (the Albanian – sorry Bianca), storage space visit to try and get Mia’s hockey gear – ended up just getting a water filter jug, burger in a bowl at Da Vinci’s, Van Hunks with Georg, tequila with pineapple and cinnamon, migrated my iPhone settings… mostly painless.
CellC SIM works way better than Vodacom in Oranjezicht – pretty constant 3G signal.
My nearest MyCITI bus stop is Montrose on the 103 route. I’m going to try it soon – for Pete.
Friday, breakfast at Lazari’s with Georg, UK visa office visit (no luck – so not going to London for the Startupbootcamp pitch day), watched some cricket, housewarming drinks: Aiden came over, Paul joined us, Power and the Glory, a drink with Dan.
Saturday, watched Mimic again, ended up giving away my two Kinky Disco tickets and had a beer at Van Hunks with Etienne and Grant.
Sunday, frozen Margaritas at Van Hunks (again) with Georg and Paul, Rafiki’s with Paul, Tori and Sean – the housewarming weekend may have gotten a bit long.
“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. — Buckminster Fuller
Observe everything. Never stop learning.
Tuesday, catch-up with Theo at Yours Truly on Kloof Street, gym, swim, sauna, a meeting at The Office, drove to Stellenbosch, big Foodlovers Market salad, email catch up at the gym, dinner with Paul at Radish (at Hartenberg).
Wednesday, woke up on Paul’s farm on a rainy morning, a quick meeting with Michael in Stellenbosch, gym, swim, sauna, salad, drove to Cape Town, Caffe Neo – slow internet, managed to get a formal invite letter from Startupbootcamp London Pitch Day, Mouille Point walk, a beer at Rafiki’s with Paul and Ben – AfrikaBurn theme camp planning – the sugar cube spiral infinity bar plan, epic burger in a bowl at Da Vinci’s on Kloof Street.
The Stellenbosch gym’s pool is way less busy than the Gardens one.
Making plans to get Mia to see AfrikaBurn.
Thursday, Cape Town Partnership meeting (about rooftop farming), meeting in Durbanville, gym – got a free smoothie by installing the Kauai iOS app, salad, house shopping in Oranjezicht, visit to the Oranjezicht City Farm, house shopping in Bakoven – met the guy who now lives in our old house – he used to know Ronnie, gelato, walked from Camps Bay to Glen Beach to Clifton 1st, walked past a lady feeding about 10 stray cats behind the Clifton lifesaving clubhouse, watched the sunset from Clifton 2nd, stopped for a beer at Bungalow, burger in a bowl again – with avo this time, a beer at Rafiki’s with Johann and Adam to talk farming, Power and the Glory, watched some Casablanca at Rick’s.
We found some fish for the first farms.
Friday, start of school holidays, Naspers/WeChat meeting – nice offices, epic six egg omelette, admin afternoon, sunset walk around Lions Head, painful visa application admin, Aces’n’Spades with Paul, Claus, Janey and Este… until they closed – good fun.
I love this city, good to be back.
Moving to Oranjezicht… something new, I have not lived there before – after two months of living out of a suitcase.
“A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for.” — William G.T. Shedd …Tinder seems to be a good source of quotes these days.
Saturday, Table Mountain lookout, Llandudno beach with Paul, nap, a beer at Van Hunks, a beer at Baccini’s with Claus and Pete.
Seems Van Hunks is the new Carlyle’s – you can walk in there on a random weekend afternoon and be pretty sure you will know a few people.
“I don’t know where I managed to find my 17th wind.” — Paul
Sunday, woke up at Claus’s house, Eggs Benedict at Carlucci’s, Mouilli Point walk, moved into a new place in Oranjezicht (top road right next to the mountain – should inspire a few walks/adventures), nap, fetched Mia, we watched Mr Peabody & Sherman – nice movie, shared a (great) pizza at Baccini’s.
