“Whoever is winning at the moment will always seem to be invincible.” — George Orwell
Tueasday, work, ISP cross connect migrations, Mia and Romeo and I took a walk down to the Camps Bay strip for some sushi.
I watched some series on Netflix this week. I’m not convinced Netflix, Amazon and Apple should be making movie/series content. They seem to run out of storyline by episode 3.
Wednesday, basically spent a day looking for a key, watched the Sabrina series on Netflix.
Thursday, office, GPON lab session, fun with cross connect migrations, found that key, braai with Mia and Nick.
I’m now Google-free. Well, as good as I can get it, I still have Chrome installed to access two spreadsheets I can’t get away from yet.
Friday, work, ISP cross connect cutover, we took Romeo for two beach walks – Camps Bay and Hout Bay, sunset braai with Mia – sirloin steaks and halloumi, time well spent.
Saturday, a cat woke me up, fed the pets, braai meat for breakfast, random tinkering, dreaming and notes processing, Mia and I took Romeo for a Bakoven walk, we had curry at The Raj down the road, gelato, extended session of watching DC Titans on Netflix – no sure if that was a good or a bad idea.
Good fun to have a dog for two weeks, and the one cat is very cool. I don’t usually like cats much – so this one is pretty spectacular.
I’ve been trying to get Paul to listen to a few podcasts. He’s been busy installing a podcast app for about 6 months now. I’m hopeful he’ll listen to a podcast soon.
Sunday, I woke Mia up – in the afternoon, we made breakfast, took Romeo for a beach walk around Oudekraal, then Llandudno, Hout Bay market and a walk around the harbour, supper at Primi down the road, Moro gelato hot chocolates, we watched Leon / The Professional – great 90s movie, watched Legends of the Fall (both from 1994) – epic movie – sadly Mia was not really impressed by the two movies, time well spent.
“I haven’t got time for this Mickey Mouse bullshit. You want cooperation, come to my office. Room 4602.” — Stansfield, The Professional
On our Sunday outing to the Hout Bay Market, Mia and I were chatting about how small businesses start and about personal networks and trust – Mia asked the value of the companies I co-founded. It’s a fairly big number. Reminded me of the Naval tweetstorm:
“Pick an industry where you can play long term games with long term people.” — Naval
Stating the obvious, but I never really understood that companies take 10 years to become valuable. Understand compounding, take a long-term view, and find people you really want to work with, for a long time. I still like the idea of starting one project per year (that could become a company).
Monday, woke up in Plett, breakfast at East Heads Cafe in Knysna, road trip back to Cape Town with Georg, took a walk to the Waterfront, 2-for-1 mussels special at Den Anker, watched The Thomas Crown Affair again.
Electric cars currently cost about R30/100km in electricity, but can take 4 hours to charge.
Tuesday, office, dev catch up, DC migration admin, saganaki salad for supper.
Wednesday, some ISP cross connect migrations, late afternoon meeting at the Waterfront, a beer in Fresnaye.
Autodidact: a self-taught person.
Thursday, up early, eggs breakfast special at Knead, a few more productive ISP cross connect migrations, extended sunset podcast promenade walk – great evening, some drama with a switch OS issue.
Friday, office, dev catch up, One Juice smoothie and turmeric shots, after work drinks at the office, early supper at Mojo Market, watched American Sniper again.
DuckDuckGo has a dark mode (-:
I installed a browser plugin that prevents me from using Google search.
“Everybody wants to save the Earth; nobody wants to help Mom do the dishes.” — P.J. O’Rourke
WWI ended 1918, WWII 1945.
Saturday, watched The Jewel of the Nile, rainy day, met Mia at the Waterfront, breakfast for lunch at W Cafe, tea at The Mount Nelson, Gardens Centre book shop visit and biltong shopping, device upgrades and backups, installed some Lucas Arts adventure games for Mia (Loom, The Dig, Sam & Max), upgraded Mia’s phone to an iPhone6s – and helped Mia with some photo management, her phone kept running out of space, a glass of red wine with Wouter, time well spent.
Mia has a Macbook Air, 2015 model. It was her first computer. I was thinking, I’m really impressed with it. Solid state storage, enough memory, lightweight, battery lasts forever. My first computer was a Commodore 64, very different devices. Seems anything made after about 2012 is pretty great. Crazy improvements in gadgets in the last 10 years.
Sunday, brunch at Green Point Park Cafe with Mia, flaneurning towards the Waterfront via the stadium, we explored the Chavonnes Battery Museum, we watched Men in Black IV – not bad, winter burger special, found Mia a new jersey, desert at the Watershed Market, I watched the Bob Lazar Area 51 doccie on Netflix, time well spent.
Thursday, creative writing, office, gpon lab tinkering, meeting at Bootleggers, watched Rocketman at the Waterfront – good movie – but not as good as Bohemian Rhapsody, a Duvel at the Duvel bar at Den Anker and the winter special moules frites, IRR organised book launch at EBs – The People’s War – nice event, I met Frans.
Friday, work, road trip to Plett with Georg for the long weekend.
The Huguenot Tunnel is about 4km long and took 4 years to build.
Saturday, brunch at The Lookout Deck with Georg, Al, Mimi, Sunene and Adrian, braai shopping, Pimms and a braai, time well spent.
Oysters take about 2 years to grow in a farm. Mussels grow in about 1 year, with males being white or creamy in colour and the females orange. South Africa also has its own indigenous Black Mussel species – these can be distinguished by the black or blue colour of the meat.
Sunday, brunch at The Lookout Deck again, oysters, in bed fairly early, time well spent, lots of laughs, thanks for organising Al!
Wednesday, work, walked to the office, turmeric shot, wifi troubleshooting, brain food at the Mojo market, micro nap, watched Romancing the Stone again, seasonal change thing – took two anti-histamines and slept like a baby.
Check out iAnalyzeWifi – on the macOS App Store, useful for wifi troubleshooting, if you don’t have an Android phone.
Thursday, work, gym, promenade walk, burger and some tinkering at Hussar.
Stating the obvious. Seems when I have more than about 5 things I should be doing, but I don’t get around to, I feel pretty demotivated. Some kind of option paralysis. The obvious answer is just to start doing one and get it done – but my brain sucks at that.
“I am, at the federal level, Libertarian; at the state level, Republican; at the local level, Democrat; and at the family and friends level, a Socialist.” — Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Skin in the Game
Friday, office, fetched Mia from school, flaneuring around Stellenbosch, book shop visit to get the 5th School for Good and Evil book for Mia, oxtail and cassata at Barrique at Vredenheim by the fireplace, time well spent.
Saturday, tinkering, backups, upgrades, a drive to Hout Bay, burgers at La Parada – top of Constantia Neck, Moro gelato, mini nap, sunset promenade flaneuring, supper and a T10 on the Stolla deck with Mia, Jenga with Barry, Wouter and Rene – and some red wine, time well spent.
Sunday, Mia finished her book, we had breakfast at Lily’s, a walk around the Waterfront, we watched X-Men Dark Phoenix 3D at the VIP cinemas – very entertaining, some flaneuring, book shop, a Duvel at the Duvel Bar and some Moules Marinieres at Den Anker – I really like that place, nap, sunset promenade walk with Mia, introduced Mia to PyGame Zero, time well spent.
