  • Week of 22-28 July.
  • Monday, breakfast with Mia, school run, gym, office, quick catch up with Paul, random tinkering while listening to some Stephan Bodzin.
  • Looks like my naming for the rebooted 27 / Geek Dinners stuck. Scenius Dinners. Scenius.co.za. 2nd one in the series is happening in the coming week.
  • Do-nothing scripting: the key to gradual automation.
  • Tuesday, work, very rainy day, meeting in Newlands, office, a beer at Strolla with Anton, dinner at Anton’s with Georg, time well spent.
  • Jacques and I have not talked in about two months.
  • Top 5 movies: Aliens, When Harry Met Sally, Spirited Away, V for Vendetta, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. This will probably have changed by next week, but Mia asked me recently, so I made a quick list.
  • Mouthwash before or after you brush your teeth? I like before, because I like the taste of toothpaste more than the mouthwash taste.
  • Wednesday, work, catch up with Justin at Newport Deli, gym, Green Point park walk, promenade walk, roast lamb and veg dinner at Georg’s with a very pleasant bottle of cinsaut.
  • Be the person you needed when you were younger.
  • Thursday, ZA Open Networking workshop at the Victoria Junction hotel, seared tuna at Beluga with the open networking geeks, fun day, deep nerding.
  • Jacques and Marietjie’s daughter was born on 25 July, Elze van der Merwe, 3.3 kg.
  • Listen to fs.blog: Cracking the Code of Love
  • Friday, office, promenade walk, nap, Georg’s birthday drinks at Van Hunks with Al, Adrian and Ryan – we have plans to build power stations.
  • Happy birthday Georg!
  • Ryan introduced me to The Red Dragon (drink): Fiery Dragon Ginger Beer and whiskey, pretty good.
  • Saturday, back to Van Hunks, watched the SA vs NZ rugby with Georg and Ryan, took a walk, Royale Burger, Moro gelato, epic nap, Rockpool with Georg, watched Paper Towns – not bad.
  • Sunday, up early, tea and backups, installed Debian 10 on a server, extended sunset podcast promenade walk.

  • Tune of the week: The Cardigans – I Need Some Fine Wine And You, You Need To Be Nicer

  • Monday, work, gym, sauna, soup for lunch, work, sunset podcast walk to the Waterfront, mussels Monday at Den Anker with Georg.
  • Georg is leaving SA for a long project soon.
  • Tuesday, early morning vlan cutovers – the last one – finally, office, dev catch up, Woodstock Exchange visit, haircut at Yogi’s, extended podcast walk.
  • Listen to the Peter Thiel interview on The Portal.
  • Wednesday, Inner City Ideas Cartel – interesting meeting, office, breakfast for lunch, Da Vinci’s ribs special.
  • “Everybody should work for themselves, commanding robots.” — Naval

  • Brew some recklessness into them.
  • I was offered ‘Life-time ISPA Fellowship‘ status, so I filled in the web form.
  • Never gets old. You got any promising leads? They got us working in shifts.
  • Teraco valuation is now 1B USD.
  • Thursday, cold and rainy day, tea, work, lunch and a catch up with Paul, work, podcast nap, watched The Boondock Saints again – great movie.
  • Work in industries which are not stagnating.
  • Octotel is now the 3rd biggest FTTH provider in SA.
  • Friday, work, fetched Mia from school, banana bread at The Deli Co at the Waterfront – nice sunset views, we watched Yesterday – cool movie – Mia enjoyed it, book shop.
  • Saturday, tea, random tinkering, Mia and I had lunch at The Company Gardens Cafe, we watched Dark Universe at the Planetarium, braai at Dirk’s, I dropped Mia off at a party, back to the braai for some Wagyu steaks, fetched Mia, back to Cape Town, time well spent.
  • Sunday, tea and grapefruit, device upgrades and backups, braai meat for brunch, perfect weather, we took an aimless walk, soft serve ice cream by the Sea Point pool, Clifton beach walk, Glen Beach, ended up having a pasta at Col’caccio’s Camps Bay, tiramisu, nap, random tinkering and notes processing, time well spent.
  • I listened to the Naval – Joe Rogan interview for the 3rd time this week.
  • Found a photo of me and a cat on Mia’s phone.
  • Note to self: more long walks.

Sea Point
  • Week of 8-14 July.
  • Monday, office, dev catch up, promenade walk, saganaki salad with Georg.
  • I was 100 podcast episodes behind at the beginning of the week – two weeks of no podcast listening.
  • Tuesday, up early, more ISP VLAN cutovers, office, sunset podcast promenade walk.
  • SOLAR FLARES
  • Wednesday, really shitty day, court, flat tyre on N2, Strolla, watched Sicario – great movie.
  • Not a big photo week, had to use a few of last week’s photos.
  • Thursday, office, ISP migrations, dev catch up, promenade walk, watched Sicario (II) Day Of The Soldado – also good.
  • Reminder to support the RR, IRR etc.
  • Friday, office, after work beers at the office, podcast nap, house party.
  • I think I should take on more nerdy projects soon – I made a list of tech I’d like to learn more about.

  • Saturday, woke up in the afternoon, watched Guardians of the Galaxy I again – epic movie, lupper with Georg at Hussar, a short Rockpool visit, watched About Time again.
  • “Well I woke up in mid afternoon cause that’s when it all hurts the most.” — Counting Crows, Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby

  • Sunday, watched Point Break again – rad movie, because of Point Break I figured I should watch Tank Girl – one of those movies I somehow missed in the 90s – it was painful and I skipped forward a bunch of times, amused myself with reading about QUIC and HTTP3, gym, Green Point park walk, extended sunset podcast promenade walk, phone chat with Paul, nerdy rabbit hole of reading about OpenWRT devices, photo processing, blogging, backups.
  • Read this again: The world in which IPv6 was a good design – which is why I was interested in QUIC.
  • Paul finally started listening to podcasts. Only took me 12 months.

Bakoven
  • Week of 1-7 July.
  • School holidays – week two. Birthday week.
  • This post is late, been doing a few boring things.
  • Monday, work, Mia and I watched The Hustle and the Waterfront – not bad but Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was much better, Mussels Monday and a Duvel at Den Anker, time well spent.
  • Doors and windows and what’s real
  • Tuesday, up early, fed the pets, work, very cold and wet day, a new puppy arrived – a Great Dane, Mia and I cooked a roast leg of lamb for dinner, time well spent.
  • The puppy is super cute. Grew up very quickly – from a real baby to walking up and down the stairs in three days.
  • I cleaned up many little puddles this week.
  • We watched more than one Friends episode this week.
  • Wednesday, the puppy woke me up, work – ISP migrations, Mia and I watched Family Secrets at The Theatre On The Bay, good show.
  • Humans love stories.
  • Thursday, my birthday, 4th of July, did some work, Mia and I took Romeo and the puppy for a Camps Bay beach walk – puppy’s first beach visit, Moro gelato, puppy fell asleep, so we went for conveyor belt sushi at The Cod Father – with a nice chardonnay, we watched Stranger Things season 3 – the full season – Mia has a thing for Stranger things and the 80s it seems – 4th of July fireworks – The Battle for Starcourt, time well spent.
  • About watching Netflix and video on demand – I remember going to The Computer Fair at Nasrec in Joburg around 1994 – they predicted that one day we would be able to stream video to our homes – they predicted it would need 8Mbps of bandwidth. Not a bad guess.
  • Friday, I watched the last Stranger Things episode again, discovered the puppy likes tea, Jarryd’s, Hartlief German deli food in the Gardens Centre, braai shopping, mini nap – but the puppy did not approve, birthday braai with Mia, Adrian, Simone, Nick and Georg, time well spent.
  • Nice spending two weeks with Mia.
  • Saturday, tea with the puppy, we took Mia’s phone for a battery swap, introduced Mia to eisbein at Hartlief deli, fetched the phone and got a new cover, dropped Mia off, attempted a nap, but the dogs wanted to wrestle, Paul and I had a joint birthday drinks event at Van Hunks, good fun.

  • Sunday, Paul’s birthday, a braai with Paul in Bakoven, catch up with Dennis and Hugo, dinner at Rene’s new apartment, time well spent, fell in bed just in time.
