Quick Update

Blah...

Geek Lair
  • Week of 14-20 June
  • Monday, pool light fixing, fetched Mia, omelette in Franschhoek, garage door battery fixing, sunset podcast golf course walk.
  • Tuesday, breakfast at The Yard with Justin - good nerdy chats, fetched Mia after her last exam, made a fire and watched Robocop 2014.
  • Wednesday, public holiday, random nerding, walk, family braai, made a fire and watched Star Trek III 1984 - director: Leonard Nimoy.
  • The DA announced they want to update the Referendum Act - good news for Cape Independence.
  • I seem to make a lot of tea in winter - like ten cups a day.
  • "The worst decision of all is none."

  • Thursday, tinkered with Routinator so it uses less memory, my new standing desk arrived - black Tekdesk 2.0, Mia managed to get 4 A's in her exams so we had sushi at the club house to celebrate.
  • I have not been using my office chair much - standing desks are pretty cool - if you get tired of standing and working - go do something else.
  • Friday, we made green smoothies, mostly organised my study - aka Joe's Lab, found some weird and wonderful old hardware including a Nokia E71, sunset podcast walk.
  • Smart water meters (IoT) are pretty cool. Got a per hour water usage report.
  • House admin and maintenance can get a bit much. Cleaner. Plumbers. Handyman. Garden services. Courier. All in one day.
  • "Make Before You Manage"

  • Saturday, some logo design tinkering, sunset walk, made a fire and watched Contact again - epic movie.
  • Oura ring seems to work best on my left pinky, size 8.
  • Sunday, woke up on the couch, long chat with Jacques, made a fire and had a bloody mary, nap, watched some movies - basically did nothing useful.
  • IPv6 Wall Of Shame for SA
  • Tune of the week: Time Pachanga Boys

Have a fun week, crazy kids.

Quick Update

Calm is a superpower. Do one thing at a time.

Alluvia
  • Week of 7-13 June
  • Monday, inbox zero start to the week - so proud of myself, sunset podcast walk, watched the Apple keynote - which was a bit meh.
  • I received a text message about my recently stolen laptop saying something like, we followed all leads, case closed. I'm sure they followed all the leads - working in shifts.
  • Tuesday, weekly meeting, gym.
  • Bugger, podcast queue zero again, need new content.
  • Wednesday, backups, gym, meeting, sunset walk, made a fire to entertain myself through loadshedding.
  • Thursday, up early to get Routinator and RPKI filtering working, no other notes for the day.
  • Pro tip: buy average red wine, or just above average, and pour it through an aerator.
  • Friday, fetched Mia after an exam, meeting at The Athletic Club & Social - Buitengracht St, nap, braai at Wouter's house with a bottle of Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage - pretty epic wine.
  • Make time for traction. Allocating blocks of time to do _one_ thing seems to not be so easy. A timebox task list is better than a todo list. The feeling that you should be doing more than one thing causes stress. Plan your time slots the day before. Timebox your mornings at least. Reserve some time slots to learn new things.
  • Every business is a meme. Make time to think - your competition is probably not doing it.
  • Saturday, woke up in Bantry Bay, lunch at Alluvia with Al, Lauren and Wouter, made a fire at home and watched various random things on my TV and laptop at the same time.
  • According to Plato, a philosopher king is a ruler who possesses both a love of wisdom, as well as intelligence, reliability, and a willingness to live a simple life. Plato said "philosophers must become king".
  • Sunday, played SimISP - Frogfoot had some problems, random tinkering, dinner with Mia at Epice - 7 course winter special - bit of an early/swapped Fathers Day - very good - try it, time well spent - try the Backsberg - Pinneau.

Have a fun week, crazy kids.

Quick Update

Loadshedding and smart plugs...

Sunset Walk
  • Week of 31 May to 6 June.
  • Monday, braai meat for breakfast, gym - found a sauna, watched Mortal Engines - pretty entertaining.
  • Tuesday, 3am server admin and kernel upgrade, phone, watch and laptop upgrade day, research day - some learning about soft and hard interrupts, fetched Mia, we had supper at Back's deli, started watching Hamilton's Pharmacopeia (HP) Season 3.
  • My minor arm surgery seems to have went well - not much of a scar.
  • Wednesday, school run, worked at Boschendal, Paarl shopping, fetched Mia, made a fire, watched a doccie about the making of Ghostbusters, some loadshedding reading with a LED lamp and a battery pack.
  • "All software wants to be version 3.0"

  • Thursday, creative writing, gym, sauna, steam room, fetched Mia, mid-week braai, in bed early.
  • "Unless it's a law of nature it's only a theory." -- about seeing the world as a scientist

  • Feels like the podcasting scene has chilled out a lot. Slower release rates. Or maybe I've just been filtering more.
  • Friday, inbox zero, home officing and hardware shopping, sunset walk, long phone chat with Jacques, made a fire, watched more HP, the Xenon episode.
  • Saturday, De Zalze to plan some cabling work, breakfast with Al at Mont Marie - go check it out, Kanonkop - try the black label Pinotage, old vintage wine festival at Muratie with Paul and Nicci - got two bottles of port from 1998, made a fire at home and watched the last of HP S3 - very interesting ending.
  • Note to self: discover more cool places around the winelands, might as well.
  • Sunday, ordered an Oura Ring - let's see if the sizing kit arrives in SA, lunch with Mia at Vrede en Lust, L'Huguenot Vineyards, The Yard, epic nap, watched L4 on Netflix - not bad, loadshedding - so I connected the TV to a battery pack via a smart-plug (wifi IoT plug) - seems the TV uses between 50 and 100 watts - more watts when it uses the subs I'm guessing.
  • Why Oura? Because Apple watch has lame battery life for sleep tracking. Fitbit is ok, but I'm sure as hell not going to sign up for recurring payments so Google can give me Fitbit 'premium' features... and I'm keen to see how Oura does HRV related metrics.

Have a fun week, crazy kids.
